Great Britain

Great Britain (short Britain) is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean off the north-west coast of continental Europe, consisting of the countries England, Scotland and Wales. Together with Northern Ireland, these form the United Kingdom (short UK). Great Britain has a population of about 65 Million people.
The first game of organised American football to be played in the UK was between US Navy servicemen from the USS Idaho and the USS Vermont. The team from the Idaho won the game on 23 November 1910 at Crystal Palace with 19–0. In 1982, terrestrial broadcaster Channel 4 began showing weekly NFL highlights, and interest in the sport surged. 1983 saw the first game between two British teams, the London Ravens beat Northwich Spartans with 48–0. In 1985, the Ravens won the first British championship in front of 7000 spectators and dominated the Budweiser league in the following years. In 1989, the British national team won the European championship.
Local teams however stand in the shadows if the NFL, which started the American Bowl in London in 1986. The London Monarchs were part of the NFL-sponsored World League of American Football from 1991. In 1995 the Scottish Claymores came to life, joining the Monarchs in the World League, which was renamed to NFL Europe shortly after that. Since the disappearance of both teams, the NFL places regular season games in London.
