ELF player pronunciation guide

From elfpedia.eu

Players from many countries play in the ELF. To help all those who need it to pronounce the names of players, coaches and officials correctly, we have launched this project.

The goal for the 2025 season is to have as many names as possible spoken in audio form by someone who speaks the native language of the person whose name they are recording.

Examples[edit | edit source]

Here is a sample file embedded in a table.

Pronunciation
Name Pos Team Language Pronunciation IPA
Johannes Schütz WR Vienna Vikings German (Austria) d͡ʒˈo͡ʊhænz ʃˈuːts
Noah Touré WR Vienna Vikings German (Austria) nˈo͡ʊʌ tʊ͡ɹɹˈe͡ɪ

What can I do to help?[edit | edit source]

If we assume that there are 60+ players per team, plus the coaches and officials, we end up with an enormous number of names. This is only possible with the help of the community. So if you would like to help us move this project forward, please contact us.

How to record a mp3 using Windows 10/11[edit | edit source]

Recording an mp3 file with Windows 10/11 is possible without installing additional software. Here's how:

Settings[edit | edit source]

  1. Invoke Windows Start menu, type "voice" or "recorder" in the search field and click to open Voice Recorder app under best match result.
  2. You can find the settings on the right-hand side by clicking on the 3 dots
  3. Click the Recording format setting - choose MP3
  4. Click Audio quality - choose Best

Start recording[edit | edit source]

At the bottom left of the app, you can select which microphone you would like to use

  • Click the Record button ("Ctrl + R")
  • Optional: Click the Pause button ("Alt + P" or "Space key") to stop the recording without separating the track to keep everything in one file
  • Click the Stop button ("Escape" or "Enter key") to finish the recording

Playback audio[edit | edit source]

  • Choose the file from the left pane
  • Click the Play button ("Space key")

Rename audio[edit | edit source]

If you want to make more than one recording in a row, it is important to name the individual recordings so that you still know which MP3 was for which name.

  • Please always use this format: FirstnameLastname.mp3

Download / Share MP3[edit | edit source]

After your recording is done, it still has to reach us, use the "show in folder" option.

  • Right-click the file and choose show in folder
  • Now you can send us the recording!

Tips on speaking/recording technique[edit | edit source]

Always remember, the people listening to a file do not know how to pronounce the name correctly.

Therefore, follow these tips to ensure a high quality recording

  • Sit up straight (this will significantly affect your voice)
  • Avoid local accents, this makes it more difficult for others
  • Make sure that your breathing is not recorded. If in doubt, use the pause function
  • Avoid background noise
  • Let a short period of time pass at the beginning (half a second approx)
  • Speak the first name(s) slowly and clearly. Do not swallow any letters that are not usually swallowed in pronunciation.
  • Allow some time to pass between several first names that do not contain a hyphen
  • After the first name(s), allow some time to pass, then pronounce the surname
