The Fehérvár Enthroners are an American football team based in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, that plays in the European League of Football (ELF) since 2023.

Enthroners have Romania as additional homegrown market.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The Enthroners were founded in 2007 and initially played in lower divisions of the Hungarian game. The Enthroners' rise began with the opening of the MÁV-Előre Stadium on Takarodó Street in 2016. The stadium called First Field is the first American football stadium in Hungary. In 2016, the Enthroners advanced to the second division Divízió I, which they immediately won in 2017. Since 2018, the Enthroners play in the HFL and in parallel in the Austrian game.

Hungarian Football League[edit | edit source]

In 2018, the Enthroners missed the play-offs in 5th place. In 2019, the team finished the regular season in 3rd place and entered the Hungarian Bowl XIV, which the Enthroners won 14-12 against the Kiev Capitals. After the cancelled 2020 season, the Enthroners won all of their 2021 regular season games, losing in Hungarian Bowl XV to the Budapest Wolves with 7:18.

Austrian Football League Division[edit | edit source]

The team is undefeated in Austrian play so far. It won the Mission Bowl of AFL Division IV (fifth highest division) in 2018, and the Challenge Bowl of AFL Division III in 2019. After the cancelled 2020 season, the Enthroners entered the Iron Bowl of Division II, but had to cancel the participation.[2] In the 2022 season, the team played in the second highest division AFL Division 1. They finished the regular season with a record of 8 wins and 0 losses and entered the playoffs. There they won the semifinal game against the Cineplexx Blue Devils with 48:18 and the Silver Bowl, the final game of the AFL Division 1, with 42:7 against Amstetten Thunder.

Central European Football League[edit | edit source]

The entry to the Central European Football League 2021 had to withdraw the team. In 2022 the Enthroners won the CEFL Cup against the Prague Lions with 24:20.

European League of Football[edit | edit source]

One month before the start of the 2022 ELF season, Commissioner Patrick Esume announced at a press conference that the Fehérvár Enthroners will be part of the ELF starting with the 2023 season.[2] Jamie Hill will continue as head coach of the team. In addition, a team of the Enthroners (under the name of Enthroners 2) will continue to play in the AFL Division 1.

2023 Season[edit | edit source]

After three defeats in the first three games, the Enthroners sacked quarterback Jerod Evans. The Hungarians also struggled under his successor Kevin Doyle. The first two victories came by armchair decision: the Prague Lions canceled the game in Fehervar at short notice after internal disputes and the Leipzig Kings withdrew from the league. On August 19, 2023, the Enthroners celebrated their first real victory: 19:3 against the Lions in front of their own fans. The Prague team had conceded home ice to the Hungarians. A week later, the Enthroners were on the verge of a major sensation: they lost to the reigning champions Vienna Vikings by just one point.

After the season, the Enthroners parted ways with Head Coach Hill.

2024 Season[edit | edit source]

The new head coach was the previous offensive coordinator Joe Ashfield. He was joined by Vince Okruch as defensive coordinator, who held the same position for the Munich Ravens in 2023. Jack Mangel was signed as the new quarterback from the Concord University Mountain Lions in December 2023.

In spring 2024, the franchise introduced the Fehérvár Enthroners American Football Academy. This newly established youth center will provide young players with both football and school education. The academy works together with the Gridiron Imports Foundation to help young players make the leap into the American college system. In the future, the Enthroners Academy will also provide the team in AFL Division I. Head Coach Ashfield is the Academy's director.

After signing WR Nathaniel Robitaille, the Enthroners went into the season full of expectations, but were unable to fully meet them. They finished the regular season 2-10 and second to last in the Eastern Division, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

2025 Season[edit | edit source]

The Enthroners presented their new logo on 02.11.2024. It is a modernized version of the old logo. HC Joe Ashfield and the Enthroners parted ways after just one season. [3]

Stadium[edit | edit source]

First Field, formerly MÁV-Előre Stadium, is an American football stadium in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. It is the home of the Fehérvár Enthroners in the European League of Football (ELF) and the Hungarian national American football team.

After an expansion in 2023, the facility will seat spectators around 4000. The name First Field is derived from the fact that the stadium is the first pure American football stadium in Hungary.
